Charles R. Copp (AZ-2)
Charles R. Copp was assigned inmate number AZ-2, making him the second prisoner listed in the Alcatraz federal inmate register. He was among the earliest group of military prisoners transferred to Alcatraz in 1934, before the penitentiary became fully operational as the nation's highest-security federal prison.
Unlike notorious gangsters such as Alphonse Capone, Copp was an Army prisoner. Records indicate that his offense was robbery and attempted assault, and he was classified as a military inmate rather than a civilian federal prisoner.
Historical records show that Copp was received at Alcatraz in June 1934, during the transfer of military prisoners from existing federal and military confinement facilities. The earliest Alcatraz population consisted largely of prisoners considered difficult to manage, escape risks, or individuals requiring strict discipline.
